Lismore Rural Fire Brigades Group was formed in September 1944 after devastating fires swept through the Western District of Victoria earlier that year. 500 homes were burnt, more than 15 people were killed and there were vast stock losses. Four separate grass fires burnt approximately 440,000 hectares in just 8 hours. The fires were a catastrophic event.
In 1961 Cressy was the final brigade to join the Group, making up the 9 Brigade membership which has continued to the present day.
The Lismore Group became registered with the CFA in 1961.
The Brigades in the Group turn out to fight grass, scrub, bush & structural fires. They also respond to motor vehicle accidents, chemical, biological & hazardous waste material incidents, confined space, high angle & trench rescue incidents & occasionally boat fires on the local lakes. The Brigades also support other emergency services at incidents, including flood assistance.
